Keris 5
KERIS 5 A Balinese keris bearing the pamor buntel mayat, or, more
correctly, since this is a Balinese keris "tambang Badung". The names applied
to this pamor have generated much discussion amongst keris collectors for a
number of years. Empu Suparman of the Karaton Surakarta understood the
Javanese name of this pamor to mean "a wrapping slanting upwards", which is
also a very accurate description of the motif, however, Indonesian people who
do not customarily use the Javanese language understand the name of this
pamor as "corpse wrapping". Since the pamor has been around a lot longer
than the use of Bahasa Indonesia, I have no doubt that Empu Suparman's
Javanese interpretation is the correct one. The Balinese name, tambangan
Badung, means "Badung rope" ( Badung was an old kingdom in south Bali).
The old kekandikan form wrongko is beautifully patinated kayu pelet, and is
fitted with a brass pendok deeply embossed with a floral motif.
The hilt ( danganan) is the bebondolan form associated with Buleleng, in
Northern Bali, and is fitted with a wewer set with red and dark blue pastes.
This is a large Balinese keris with a much sought after pamor, and in old, well
preserved dress.
